How You Can Help Support Families and Youth this Holiday Season

There are many ways you can provide support and hope for local families in the Guelph and Wellington County (Ontario) area during the Christmas season. Below is some information to help you decide what option(s) would be best for you. We are also happy to speak with you to help you decide what would be best to do. Giving Adopting a Family or an Independent Youth

Donors can be matched to a family (primary family or caregiver family) or an Independent Youth to provide gift cards for them to purchase gifts and the groceries they need for the holidays. We will match you to the right size family based on your budget and any other information you provide.

Gift CardPurchasing Grocery and/or Gift Cards

Gift cards for groceries, drugstores, shopping malls, and department stores are very much needed and are another great way to support the Adopt-A-Family program in an easy and convenient way. We use gift cards to help supplement where needed and to help with the later, emergency family referrals that we cannot adopt out. In 2019, we used over $40,000 in donated grocery and gift cards to help families. We anticipate the need will be even higher in 2020.

Jacket 02 Donating Winter Wear

With our adaptation in 2020, we are concerned about kids who need new winter coats and boots since the gift card model may make it difficult for families to get what they need given the timing. This year, we are holding a Winter Wear Drive to collect coats, boots, hats, mitts, and scarves. These will be distributed to families in need in partnership with Lakeside Hope House, the Community Resource Centre, and some of our other social-community agencies. Donors who select this option will be sent information about where to drop off their items. We will begin collecting in early October.  While we traditionally only accept new items for Adopt-A-Family, for this year we will also accept gently used coats and boots to distribute in the community.

Stroller Purchasing a Special Item

We hope to provide some high need items such as car seats and strollers for infants, and support items for children with special needs and disabilities. Our team will be in touch with you if you select this donation option to discuss what is currently needed.

Drive Holding a Gift Drive

Businesses or community groups may be interested in holding a Gift Card or Winter Wear drive. We can provide you with information and materials to help you hold a successful drive.

Cash Making a Cash Donation

We can pool cash donations to purchase enough gift cards to ensure that we are able to help every family to have a happy holiday. This includes emergency last-minute family referrals that we are not able to adopt out to a donor due to the timing.
