Skyline - National Reach, Local Impact
August 20, 2019
It’s not often that you come across a large organization with such a strong focus on the local community. That’s what you can expect when you walk in the doors of Skyline here in Guelph. Skyline’s reach across Canada is vast as they employ approximately 1,000 Canadians nation-wide and 250 people locally. Although they are a national company, they operate under the belief that giving back to their local communities is of the utmost importance. “We wanted to give back in such a way that makes our tenants, investors, and staff proud to be a part of Skyline,” says COO R. Jason Ashdown. “We know that a strong community is a strong place to do business, and Skyline wants to help build those communities. The Children’s Foundation encapsulates a lot of what we look for in terms of giving back and we know the contributions we make go directly to the people in our community who need it most.”
Skyline’s relationship with the Children’s Foundation began with an office-led Adopt-A-Family fundraiser in their Guelph office. Their involvement has since grown to now support all four programs that the Foundation offers. “We wanted our donation to really have an impact on the community. We see that the Children’s Foundation offers programs that support the whole child so we want to get behind each of those programs. We’re an investment company – we believe in investing in kids’ futures,” explains Ashdown. Skyline’s annual Charity Golf Classic raises money for different charities in Guelph, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, Shelldale Family Gateway and the Children’s Foundation. This year, Skyline increased their donation to the Children’s Foundation from the Golf Tournament by $10,000 for a total of $35,000 annually! Their donation will support Free to Grow, Food & Friends and, beginning next year, the Scholarships program. “I read in the Foundation’s newsletter about another company in Guelph that is supporting all four programs and I thought ‘We should be doing that’,” says Ashdown. “Companies giving back to the communities they operate in is the right thing to do. But if their giving can encourage other companies to give (or give more) that is where the real impact happens.”
Skyline is celebrating their 20th Anniversary this year – 20 years in business and 20 years of giving back to their community. Beyond their financial support of community organizations, they have also set up a tenant relief fund for residents of their Skyline properties which provides resources and financial aid to their tenants who have fallen on hard times. They are also in the process of developing Skyline Community Hub in Fergus, a space that will bring community organizations together to improve collaboration and better serve the Centre Wellington Community. “We know that writing a cheque is the easy part. We also want to connect people in our communities with resources to help break the cycle of poverty.”
We are so grateful for our strong partnership with Skyline and for their continued generosity and ongoing commitment to the children and families in our community! Thank you Skyline!
