Adopt-A-Family Donor Sign-Up Begins!
October 26, 2017
It's that magical time of year, where Christmas miracles happen for local families in need thanks to a generous community of donors who sign-up through the Children’s Foundation Adopt-A-Family Program. In 2016, 1,114 families felt a sense of relief, joy and hope at a time of year that can be very stressful with the extra pressure the holidays bring to provide gifts for their children. For many families, life is already a struggle just to provide basic essentials like housing and food. The impact of the Adopt-A-Family Program on these families is tremendous.
"To the family who helped us get through the holidays and helped make sure our children had presents under the tree - thank you from the bottom of our hearts. When I saw the gifts, I started to cry. We need more people like you in the world."
Families referred to the program include single moms and dads, independent youth, two parent families, as well as children being raised by grandparents. They are referred to the Children’s Foundation by social agencies including Family & Children’s Services, the Canadian Mental Health Association, Community Resource Centre, and Women in Crisis, just to name a few. These families are in situations including a loss of a job, illness or a death in the family or some other challenge that would prevent them from providing Christmas gifts for their children and a holiday meal without the help of their community. The needs and wishlists that are provided to the donor are actual needs and wishes of the children and families. This adds to the personal nature of the program.
Adopt-A-Family donors include individuals, families, businesses, churches, community organizations, and even kids helping kids. Many donors have decided to forego the tradition of gift exchanges and instead make sure there are presents under the tree for those in need. As a donor for the Adopt-A-Family program the impact can be very special. It’s not unusual for donors to say, “I love my family and can’t wait to start shopping for them!”
Or as one donor wrote to us: "You have the hard work: caring for Guelph's needy families all year, and especially at Christmas when expectations are high and so many have so little. Our own family has been blessed with good fortune. We gave ourselves a different gift this year, the gift of giving to others. More importantly, our personal Christmas spirits were revived this year when we were able to give to those who wished for something and really needed it."
