Program Partners

The Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington strives to help as many children as possible in accessing sports, camps and other recreational activities. It is estimated that close to 5,000 children in Guelph and Wellington are living in low income households. In 2016, the Children’s Foundation has been able to fund approximately 1,851 activities for 1,160 children. But we recognize there is still work to do to ensure that all of those 5,000 children have access to the opportunity to participate in the activity of their choice.

By partnering with other organizations, we are able to stretch our resources to meet the growing demand. In 2016, even with an increase in our Free to Play budget, we still ran out of funds by the end of September. This meant disappointing a number of families who were not able to receive any support for their children’s activities in the fall. By partnering with sports and arts organizations, we are able to take the necessary step in achieving more equity so that more children will have the opportunity to experience playing a sport, going to camp or participating in the arts.

We are very grateful for the ongoing support of our Program Partners. You can click on the links below to read more about their support.

Jumpstart AwardWe are proud to be the Community Partner for both the Guelph and Centre Wellington Canadian Tire Jumpstart Chapters since 2009. As community partners, we work together to help as many kids as possible as we administer their funding in collaboration with our Free to Play Program.

By partnering, this has also furthered the goal of the Free to Play Program to make the financial assistance process more simple and accessible by having one point of access for all activities.

In 2016, Jumpstart provided funding for 222,149 children across Canada, disbursing over $20 million

At the 2012 "Around the World" Gala, Jumpstart was recognized as a Visionary Partner of the Foundation for their collaborative support over the years. In 2013, Jumpstart moved to the Benefactor level having provided over $100,000 in funding for local children in just 4 years!

"Canadian Tire Jumpstart is dedicated to removing barriers, so children can participate in organized sports and recreation. We see it as equiping kids for life, because participation in organized sport and recreation increases a child’s chance for success in life. They discover and participate. They gain self-confidence. They develop self-esteem. They learn leadership skills. Their lives become richer. This is the power of Canadian Tire Jumpstart.”

The Children's Foundation of Guelph and Wellington is pleased to partner with the YMCA-YWCA of Guelph to provide financial support for local children to go to camp. The Y movement in Canada is over 150 years old and is a community benefit organization, serving people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities through all stages of life.  They are dedicated to helping people attain good health through a healthy lifestyle and excel in delivering lifelong opportunities for health and personal growth.

The Y provides values-based programs and services that teach the importance of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and inclusiveness. It’s a place where friendships are formed and family ties are strengthened. The Y is a community centre where people meet and discover common needs or interests. To reach as many people as possible, the Y offers financial assistance to those who would otherwise be unable to benefit from its services. You can read about their own subsidy program for Y memberships HERE.

With their mandate to provide financial support and their motto of building healthy communities, the YMCA-YWCA of Guelph is a natural partner for the Children's Foundation's Free to Play Program where building brighter futures for local children is a common goal. Whether families apply to the Guelph Y or to the Children's Foundation for camp subsidies, our combined support will allow us the opportunity to assist more families by allocating funding to even more recreational activities. In addition to their funding support, the Guelph Y offers invaluable input into our Free to Play Program by participating on our Task Force Committee which meets regularly to review our guidelines and procedures.

Kids love dancing at Move With Grace Dance Studio and now even more children will have the opportunity to pursue their passion through Move With Grace's partnership with the Children's Foundation of Guelph and Wellington.

Founded in 2004, Move With Grace Dance Studio created a clear vision of how they would be different including being a family-friendly studio where parents could observe classes at all times. They also appreciate that the studio and its teachers are part of a child's influence so they approach the dance process as a whole experience. Age appropriate music, costuming, choreography and behaviour is used at all times.

Move With Grace Dance offers instructions in a wide variety of styles including ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical contemporary, hip hop, musical theatre, acrobatic arts and competition - all taught by a roster of over 10 experienced teachers plus guest instructors. They have studios in Cambridge and Fergus and we are pleased that their Fergus studio is able to help the Children's Foundation stretch its resources through their in-kind donation of waived fees.

"I'm very happy to partner with an organization like the Children's Foundation," says Move With Grace Dance Studio owner, Robyn Tedesco. "I'm especially thrilled to be the first dance studio to forge a partnership and to support the Children's Foundation mission to build brighter futures for children by making sure kids have access to our dance and camp programs."

In addition to this ongoing partnership, Move With Grace Dance Studio is also running P.D. Day fundraisers where kids can have fun exploring dance and the proceeds are donated to the Children's Foundation.

The Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington and Pablo’s World of Cartoons are working together to ensure children in need have the opportunity to experience the joy of art.

Pablo’s World of Cartoons offers after school classes in cartooning, drawing, comic book making and even claymation and animation. They are moving into a new space in the old Civic Museum building at 6 Dublin Street which is being converted to a Creative Arts Centre. The centre "Mrs. Black’s Boarding House for the Arts” will also have space for mid-career artists and shared studio space for emerging artists.

The cost to participate in Pablo’s classes includes all materials but sometimes the fees to register can still be difficult to cover for families that are struggling to meet their basic needs. It was that issue that made this partnership so important.

"We hope to give children a chance to create creative art works, even if their parents have limited funds and can’t afford it. I understand that because my parents experienced the same struggle with me when I was growing up. We are partnering together so that all children have the opportunity to "Educate, Create & Celebrate” art."

"After 10 or 12 years of training athletes in the Guelph area through my Shake True Hoops program, it occurred to me that not all kids had access to these methods of training, nor to the equipment and facilities," says Shaker. "I decided to do what I could to open my program to everyone." Thus, a brother organization, Ball 4 All,  began in 2007 and became a year-round Not-for-Profit sports initiative in September 2011. Through Ball 4 All, all youth in the Guelph area could have access to education, skill building, fitness opportunities, social awareness, team work, sports competition, training and instruction, nutrition and a pantheon of guest speakers through a basketball themed program.  Given Shake True Hoops & Ball 4 All's commitment to making basketball accessible for all youth, a partnership with the Children's Foundation was a perfect fit.

To Be Determined Theatre Co. is a youth focused theatre company which offers theatre programming for youths as well as theatre for young audience productions! Their innovative theatre programming for ages 3-20 offers tons of classes and performing experiences.

Artistic Director, Alexandra Lent, founded TBD Theatre Co in 2011, following her passion for performing, teaching and directing theatre arts. "The possibility to teach a craft that I love so much myself soon became my new profession. I had taught dramatic arts in private schools, workshops, festivals, directed adult and youth productions and designed curriculum for municipal programs and I now use all of these experiences to develop quality and creative children’s programming at TBD Theatre Co," says Lent.

TBD Kids

Lent was drawn to base TBD Theatre Co. out of Guelph because of the city’s pride of community. In her experience, community means engaging people as their input and hard work are essential in creating the best possible process and result. This is the philosophy that drove her to establish To Be Determined Theatre Co, and this vision ensures that theatre is a community effort, where everyone has a place, a voice, a role and celebrates in the reward from their hard work. This approach also extends into To Be Determined Theatre Co.'s role in the broader community, and the Children's Foundation is pleased to partner with TDB Theatre Co. in our Grants program. Their recreational partnership with the Children's Foundation of Guelph and Wellington will make it possible for more children to engage in the arts. By waiving registration fees for children who have applied to participate at TBD Theatre Co., they have allowed our Grants Program the freedom to assist more families by allocating our funding to other recreational activities.
