July 11, 2011 A Last Minute Decision - An Amazing Experience

What would you do if you got a call on Saturday morning while at yoga asking if you wanted to participate in the Southern Ontario Amazing Race for the rest of the weekend? John Supple said yes, ran home, quickly packed a backpack and joined the Race! Here's his story.

"Although I was drafted into SOAR part way through the race, maybe it was best that way. If I had time to think about it I may not have chosen to participate. Having now finished the race with Meeghan it was an experience that I won’t forget. At the finish line I was pretty adamant about not racing again but after a few days of recovering and lots of A535 I am thinking maybe I would like another crack at it but next time from start to finish.

"Going into this Meeghan and I were casual friends and I don’t think either of us knew how it would work out nor did we have much time to think about it but it worked out great. I couldn’t ask for a better partner in the race, she was amazing. I now know not to upset here after watching her at the target range (10 for 10), I also know if I need soil moved at my house she can do that and quickly. She’s also calm under pressure and if my car ever breaks down I know who to call to help give me a push. The one downfall she has is that she doesn’t throw a golf ball any better than I do as I think we spent more time going through the obstacle course than any other team, I have the bruises to prove it.

"It was great to have an awesome partner for the race but it was the whole experience that I can’t say enough about. It was so well organized and the organizers and volunteers were great. I was a transplant to Guelph when I married years ago and I still work in Burlington where I grew up so I haven’t got involved in a lot of Guelph programs over the years. Coming into the race I didn’t know what the Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington did but I went online after the race to find out. What an impressive organization! I am so happy to have helped out because it really is a wonderful cause. For an event like this to raise almost $75,000 for a local charity is phenomenal, it must make everyone who participated feel great to help make it such a success. It’s really the only part of the race I feel badly about is that I didn’t get to help raise money for the cause, so, having said that I would like to personally donate $627 so that the total can be an even $75,000.

"Again thanks to the organizers, the volunteers, the racers, Meegan and my wife Deanna who called me in the first place to jump in and who was also one of the volunteers."
