Nov. 6, 2009 Food and Friends Helps Kids Grow and Learn

Food and Friends provides an important and much needed service in Guelph, Wellington and Dufferin County by supporting student nutrition programs at 65 locations. In the 2009/2010 school year 11,800 students will be provided with meals.

The 65 programs include 4 lunch programs, 31 morning meal/snack programs and 30 breakfast programs. The positive impacts of these programs in our schools are countless. Below is a small glimpse into how Food and Friends is providing brighter futures as shared by staff at schools in Guelph, Wellington and Dufferin.

“I have seen how something as simple as a nutritious meal can improve a child physically, emotionally, and socially, as both a student and a healthy human being.”

“It is clearly evident that student learning has improved as many students are now able to better focus on their studies as snacks are permitted whenever the students are hungry”

“We have a number of families for whom the provision of daily food stretches their budget. The fruit and snack program helps to support children in those families with additional food; in a manner that maintains their dignity.”

“The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Increased attentiveness and feelings of community are evidenced along with decreased school absences among students. Additionally, many of our students are bussed to school. Our school serves a number of remote areas which requires many of them to be on the bus for 30 minutes or more. The Snack Program offered in the morning helps to ensure that our students are alert and ready to meet the school day.”
