April 5, 2011 Grants Program Lets County Kids Be Kids

The Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington is well into another year of "Letting Kids be Kids”. The Grants Program provides financial assistance to children in need so that they can enjoy valuable activities like sports, arts and camp.
In 2011, children who live in Wellington County have been given the opportunity to take part in activities like gymnastics, swimming lessons, music lessons, skating and even snowboarding.
One mom whose 11 year old son was funded to take snowboarding lessons wrote "Now that he learned about snowboarding – he enjoys it very much and found out that he is good at it. It gave him back some of his self confidence!” The 11 year old said that for him, his favourite part was "doing 180s”.
Families that receive funding from the program are those who have a household income of less than $40,000. These families include single parent families, families that are dealing with a job loss or health issues and various other circumstances.
The Town of Minto provides fun and beneficial activities for children, like swimming lessons, and has had participants supported by the Grants Program. Their Recreation Coordinator, Matthew Lubbers says "It’s great to see children who wouldn’t normally have the chance to participate in a recreational program do so with the assistance of the Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington. These positive experiences are something that the children won’t soon forget.”
The Grants program will fund up to $400 of the registration fees each year for the activities chosen by the child and family. The Children’s Foundation is able to offer this program through fundraising initiatives and the generous support of community partners, businesses and individuals.
