How We Help Kids

The Children's Foundation provides financial assistance for kids in Guelph and Wellington County so that they can experience parts of childhood that many of us take for granted. These kids are currently in family situations that limit their ability to access sports and recreation activities, summer camp, post-secondary education and even sometimes, having the nutrition they need to learn at school.

Below is an outline of the programs and how we are helping build brighter futures, one child at a time.

The Adopt-A-Family Program currently focuses on partnering families in need with donor families at Christmas time. These families in need require assistance in providing a full experience for the entire family at this time of the year. Donor families are asked to provide unwrapped gifts and food vouchers for the children of the family in need as well as a gift for the parent(s) of the family. In 2009, over 600 families were helped, which included 1,350 children.

The Children’s Foundation Grants focus on providing funds to allow for educational and recreational enrichment for individual children. In 2009, approximately 600 children accessed $93,000 in grants.

Food and Friends supports 65 nutrition programs for students in Guelph, Wellington and Dufferin counties. We believe that every child has the right to go to school well nourished and ready to learn. In the 2009/2010 school year, on site programs will provide meals to over 11,800 students. Our programs depend on our volunteers, and community and corporate support.

The Future Fund Scholarships are offered to each of the 11 high schools in Guelph and Wellington County. The criteria for recipients focuses not on academic standing but rather on life achievement and goals in the face of difficult life situations. The scholarship takes into account the background of the child and the need they have to be able to move on to post-secondary education.

The Promoli Family Scholarship is for one child in the care of Family & Children’s Services of Guelph & Wellington. The recipient is an individual child that has been identified by F&CS that has shown great future goals and aspirations in the face of difficult circumstances. The Scholarship can be used for university, college, technical or professional education or training.
