The demand for the Children’s Foundation Adopt-A-Family Program has increased this year with over 920 families already referred to the program by social workers and more referrals coming in every day. Unfortunately this increase in demand is challenging to meet and currently there are about 200 families still waiting to be “adopted” this year.

“Sometimes we can't control life's plot twists.”  This sentiment, from just one of the 934 families helped by the Children’s Foundation Adopt-A-Family Program in 2015, captures in seven simple words why this holiday support program is so needed in our community. Life can sometimes take a sudden turn and anyone can find themselves needing a helping hand. Christmastime may be a magical, special time of year for most, but for families struggling to make ends meet all year long or who are facing an unexpected turn of events, the holidays can bring immeasurable stress and worry. The importance of this program for these families is tremendous.

Families referred to the program include single moms and dads, independent youth, two parent families, as well as children being raised by grandparents. They are referred to the Children’s Foundation by social agencies including Family & Children’s Services, the Canadian Mental Health Association, Community Resource Centre, and Women in Crisis, just to name a few. These families are in situations including a loss of a job, illness or a death in the family or some other challenge that would prevent them from providing Christmas gifts for their children and a holiday meal without the help of their community.

The needs and wishlists that are provided to the donor are actual needs and wishes of the children and families. This adds to the personal nature of the program.

Adopt-A-Family donors include individuals, families, businesses, churches, community organizations, and even kids helping kids. Many donors have decided to forego the tradition of gift exchanges and instead make sure there are presents under the tree for those in need. As a donor for the Adopt-A-Family program the impact can be very special. It’s not unusual for donors to say, “I love my family and can’t wait to start shopping for them!”
